“The coolest people I’ve ever met have the most colorful pasts. They’ve lived lives of risk, made bad choices, learned lessons, explored and they’re not afraid of being real. Tattered tapestries woven of similar threads, they’re my kind of people – my favourite shades of crazy”
I’m Dr Denise Baker, a Psychologist, entrepreneur, Reiki practitioner and life coach and I have a colourful past! I’m not sure of the origin of this quote, but I love it. We’ve all had periods of hardship and struggle and also relative prosperity. I don’t just mean financial, but physical, emotional and spiritual. Sometimes we feel as though we wither, while other times we grow. This quote describes a state of being that many of us can identify with.
My life and path has seen many twists and turns. On leaving school I trained as a chef and nutritionist but decided I’d made a mistake and started again. I then retrained as a psychologist working in health, forensic and clinical settings for sixteen years before facing a life changing period of redundancy and unemployment. This happened in 2009 and by 2010 I’d returned to food and set up my own business; an outside catering company, followed by a social enterprise in 2015. I have been working in my own business since and have received training in various aspects of business management as well as acting as a business mentor.
In 2017 after a series of traumatic life events and a knee injury I was forced to re-evaluate my own life and career. While undergoing this process I chose to step back into psychology and utilise my own life experiences to help others going through similar transformations.
During my years as a psychologist I trained in CBT techniques, Mindfulness based stress reduction, alcohol counselling (with CAIS). More recently I embarked on a period of CPD and completed courses in NLP and Life Coaching.
As a holistic therapist / healer I draw upon those psychology and counselling skills, combining them with my healing training, creative influences and life skills to offer a broad-based approach that enables individuals to discover and enact meaningful change.
In addition to my own practice, I also work with Big Ideas Wales as a entrepreneurial mentor with fourteen to twenty five year old’s, and I am also a volunteer mentor with Business Wales.
I offer a friendly and relaxed, confidential and non-judgmental environment in which to explore issues and problems.
I recently began training as an end of life doula. For more on the services I offer as an End of Life Doula see the page tab above.
